Niagara-on-the-Lake hosted Scouting's 8th World Jamboree in 1955. The large encampment, which hosted 11,000 participants, was erected on the Commons beside Butler's Barracks. This site had been home to military encampments on previous occasions.

Port Dover was a staging point for General Isaac Brock in his 1812 campaign to defeat the American Army of the Northwest. Ultimately Brock struck west from York (Toronto)and besieged Detroit where with First Nation help he forced a capitulation.
