Description:
These are locations from which people can safely watch volcanoes. These places are truly spectacles of nature.
Expanded Description:

Suitable locations will be places that someone can observe a volcano from a safe distance. The distance depends on what type of volcano and how frequently it erupts. For example, volcanoes in Hawaii tend to be relatively safe due to their frequent slow moving lava flows. Because of this it is possible to get within 1 mile of an eruption. On the other hand, there are some volcanoes that are explosive in nature and it would not be safe to be within 10 miles during a period of elevated activity. But that same volcano may be reasonably safe during slower activity periods. For example, Mt. Saint Helens would be much safer to approach in 2006 than it was in 1980. Right now it would be reasonable to get within a few miles of the cone.

Note: An active volcano has no precise definition, but scientists believe that volcanoes that have erupted in the past 10,000 years could become active again. Therefore, for the purposes of this category, we will accept any volcanoes that have erupted within the last 10,000 years. That activity can be lava flows, lava dome building, fumaroles, and other related features.

Instructions for Posting a Volcano Watching Waymark:
Waymarks to be placed in this category must include a photograph of the volcano, the coordinates from where the photo was taken or from a safe vantage point, and directions to that location that most people could follow. A Long Description that is different from the Quick Description is required.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. However, if the waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand what the waymark is about. And, as always, please cite your sources. Thank you!

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
To log a waymark in this category you must include a photo of the volcano.
