Virginia Historical Markers
Description:
Almost every driver on Virginia’s roadways has seen one. The state sponsored markers are tall, silver historical highway markers. In addition there are historical markers sponsored by municipalities, counties, and various organizations such as the DAR. All together there are many more than 2,000 of them bringing bits of history to motorists in Virginia.
Expanded Description:
The state highway marker program, begun in 1927 and administered by the Department of Historic Resources (DHR), is one of the oldest in the country. The markers, silver with black letters and emblazoned with the state seal, carry historical inscriptions commemorating sites, individuals, buildings, and events of statewide or national interest. Other historical markers, such as county marker programs are also welcome in this category.
Instructions for Posting a Virginia Historical Markers Waymark:
1. The waymark must be an official Virginia Historic Marker, erected by the authority of the state, a municipality, college, or similar authority. It should be along a highway, in a highway rest area, or some other similar setting.

2. Each marker must include a photo you have taken of the marker. Additional photos showing you or your GPS with the marker and the area or the place commemorated by the marker would be great, but not required. Please do not use pictures from other sites without prior permission.

3. In the "long description" field, please include a brief description of the purpose for the marker. What happened here? You can enter the marker text, or summarize it, or use your own words.

4. The text of a marker usually only hints at the depth of the history behind it. Try doing a Google search on the subject matter of the marker, and if you find a good website, include a link in the optional field provided.

The minimum requirements to be approved as a Virginia Historical Marker are:

  • Include only the NAME (not marker number or location) in the name.
  • The marker location must be accurate.
  • The marker must be a state, county, or local roadside historical marker.
  • The picture must be of high enough quality to where the words on the marker can be read. Please do not include a photo of your GPS.
