Take the lowly muffler. Alone and unadorned,
the oblong metal object is about as enticing as a can of used motor oil. This is a thing, after all, that spends its entire grimy life underneath a car.
But add a few accouterments and accessories — some lug nuts here, a catalytic converter there, a work shirt, gold chain and splashes of paint — and you have something else entirely: a sculpture named "Homey," also known by the clever auto mechanic who made him as a "muffler art man."
This category is about locating these sculptures made out of used car parts (automotive mufflers are only one component) and other automotive parts. They must be welded together to form gangly human or other animal shapes, these whimisical pieces of folk art are often placed in front of automotive shops and gas stations. Lately, these types of 'muffler men' have made their way into art galleries; and have experienced a rebirth as a highly celebrated form of folk art.
