Human Error
Managed By: Icon Here To Err is Human
Description:Showcasing those times things just didn't go as planned, or when the plan was flawed.
Expanded Description: Waymarks in this category represent those times that are best described as a failure.

Waymarks should be permanent, and clearly viewed as a mistake or error of some sort. These will typically be engineering or construction errors, like design or implementation flaws.

Some examples of waymarks that would fit well in this category are the Leaning Tower of Pisa or a door that doesn't line up with the steps that lead to it. Subway tunnels tunnelled from opposing directions but did not meet correctly in the middle, bridges that fell down because metric bolts were used instead of imperial, the list goes on.

If the failure occurred in the past, and is no longer visible, the location can be waymarked only if there is a plaque or memorial that is permanently visible located here. You must provide a photo of the plaque/memorial.

Note: We are not looking for waymarks of vehicle crashes, unless this was the direct result of an engineering failure AND the vehicle is still visible (permanent). The emphasis for this category is on the engineering error, not the resulting disaster that may have occurred.

We will not be accepting Plane Crashes or Shipwrecks, as these have their own category. Plane crashes have their own waymark category. Shipwrecks also have their own category.

Try to find out some background information about the mistake - how did this happen?

Some examples of waymarks that will typically not be accepted in this category

  • Planes, Trains, Automobiles, Bicycles, Segways, In-Line Skaters, Hamsters that crashed due to non engineering related failures (operator error)
  • Locations of people / companies responsible for the failure....waymark the actual error please.
  • A door that opens to mid-air - this is very often deliberate in shipping / agricultural communities
  • Age related failure
  • Overly common failures, including potholes and things like fallen retaining walls (added: 12/10/2009)
  • Non-permanent waymarks

Some examples of waymarks we'd love to see in this category:
  • The Tacoma Narrows Bridge near Seattle, WA, USA
  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy
  • The Bridge Pont-Quebec in Ste-Foy, QC, Canada
  • The Big Dig collapse in Boston, MA, USA
  • The Salton Sea in California, USA
  • The HMS Titanic was doomed by an engineering flaw
  • The Clyde Arc in Glasgow, Scotland, UK
  • Instructions for Posting a Human Error Waymark:
Provide a photo (of the human error) that you took, and clearly shows what the error is. It would be nice if you could also provide a context for the error by submitting an additional photo of the area around the error. Please don't clutter your photo with your GPS.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category: There are no log instructions listed for this category.

Human ErrorTop O'Hill Terrace retaining wall - Arlington, Texas

    in Human Error

In the 30's, when this wall was built, they did not engineer enought strength into the retaining wall. The remainder of the walls around it have held over the same time with no sign of failure.
