Description:
The original idea for wooden Plank Roads came from Russia to Canada in the 1830’s and became, for a short time, a popular method of road construction spreading, in the 1840’s, to the US. Some disappeared, others are now just trails, many became paved roads but in many cases the name stuck and you can still find signs to indicate that the road was once a "Plank Road"
Expanded Description:
A plaque, road sign or other evidence (e.g. remaining planks) indicating that a road was once constructed with wooden planks. The road must have been originally designed for vehicles - no pedestrian walkways, boardwalks etc. should be placed in this category.

Wooden Plank bridges are permitted in this category but only if the bridge was designed for road vehicles and if there are still wooden planks visible.
Instructions for Posting a Plank Roads Waymark:
Find, and post the coordinates and a picture of a plaque or road sign indicating that a road was once built with wooden planks. Include the location and any information you can find on its history. If you're lucky enough to find any remaining planks, post a picture of these. In the case of plank bridges make sure your picture includes the wooden planks and that the bridge was designed for road vehicles.

One waymark per location although different signs at different locations along the same road are allowed if separated by at least a mile.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
There are no log instructions listed for this category.

Plank Road along I8 outside Yuma on the California side of the river. The signs are faded from the heat, and the planks are covered in sand and many are missing, but it's still a great place to see history!
