Pictorial Pub Signs
Managed By: Icon Here Inn Signs
Description:
This category is dedicated to finding traditional pub signs where the name of the establishment is depicted pictorially on a board hung outside the establishment.
Expanded Description:

This category is dedicated to finding traditional pub signs where the name of the establishment is depicted pictorially on a board hung outside the establishment. We are specifically looking for fine examples of the sign painter’s art. Typical examples can be seen at the Inn Sign Society web site.

What the category will not accept are simple signs that only display the name of the establishment or brewery. The dominant element of the sign must be pictorial. i.e. the sign should be a picture with incidental lettering. NOT a sign that is predominantly lettering with a token picture on it.

Pub signs became a royal decree by Richard II in 1393, in UK, so that the illiterate populace could see what was on offer. Visit Link

Instructions for Posting a Pictorial Pub Signs Waymark:

In the long description some history of the establishment that the sign refers to would be nice. A typical description might answer some of the following :-

When was the first pub on this site?

Has the pub always had this name, if not what was it previously called? - As many change their names continuously it would be good to get all names possible.

When was the pub first given its present name?

Is there any local significance or legend to the name?

How many pubs were there in this area, and how many now survive?

Who painted the sign and when?

Photographs

The default picture for the waymark should be a high quality close up photograph (not a camera phone) of the pub sign, cropped to show just the sign. A second photograph of the pub with the sign is also required.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
To log a visit, a photograph of yourself or your GPSr by the pub sign is required. Some description of your visit would be welcome.

Category Settings:
  • Waymarks can be added to this category
  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
  • Category is visible in the directory
Variables:
