This building was possibly best known for its one time owner, George Cruikshank, a Mason who became The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta in 1928 and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA) from 1930 to 1935.

The only bit of heritage left on this corner is this sign, placed by Crowsnest Heritage to apprise us of what had gone before. The bakery must have baked ghost buns, as we could smell fresh ones while walking by.

One of the oldest buildings standing in Blairmore, the Oliva Block is 106 years old as of 2015, having managed to escape fires in 1912, 1919 and 1923. Moreover, it has retained mush of its original styling, a mean feat in this town.

In 1921 Hillcrest, like every other town in the Crowsnest, experienced the fire which took out the first building on this site, a boarding house and diner. It was replaced in short order by a Chinese Restaurant, which operated until 1959.

It's 1923 and this new fireproof brick building is going up quickly, replacing its 'burned to the ground' predecessor. This was the story for essentially this whole block in 1923, as fire had taken out most of it.

Interestingly, this brick building was named after a Titanic survivor, Colonel A. G. Peuchen. Built in 1911, the building has been home to a plethora of businesses and organizations, from a dentist's office to an RCMP detachment.

Old Maude - fitting name for an old workhorse of its vintage (of which we're not sure). Old Maude, after a lifetime of hauling coal from Crowsnest mines, was salvaged and restored in 1967 and is now proudly displayed in the park along 20th Avenue.

One of the early buildings to go up in Blairmore, the Cos was a two storey wood frame hotel. The 1912 fire, which levelled six buildings on the block, took out The Cos which was immediately rebuilt of brick. Another survivor, it remains open today.
