Border Crossings

Managed By: Icon Here Border Crossing
Description:
The purpose of this category is to notate places where one might travel from one state, province or county to another. These should be ‘official crossings’, not just a point along the border. . These would be either the border between countries, or between the primary geographical divisions within an individual country. (Note new changes, effective October 2009)
Expanded Description:

NOTE: This is a work in progress. If you have any suggestions for examples not included, or feel something could be better worded, feel free to send a message to an officer and we will take it into consideration.

State borders may be found in the United States, Mexico and Australia. Provincial Borders may be found in Canada, Belgium and Spain. County borders may be found in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland and Norway.

An additional note about ferry crossings: Unlike roads, ferry paths often do not occur in the same exact location. In these instances a single Waymark might serve to notate a broad section of the border. Remember that navigational lanes operate just like roads—opposing traffic has their own ‘lane’, much like a divided highway. And with some ferry terminals serving multiple locations the associated border might be several miles/kilometers wide.

-------------

10/2009 – The category was extensively rehabilitated. Certain posted marks have received a grandfather clause. Not included in this clause are instances where the border has more than one Waymark created, as per the category instructions these should have never been approved.

Grandfathered Waymark types that are no longer acceptable: Survey Stones that are just at Border Points; not at Official Border Crossings

Instructions for Posting a Border Crossings Waymark:

-Only one WM for each crossing. Coordinates should be as close to the actual border as possible. Must be a publicly accessible crossing—NO PRIVATE ROADS.

-The suggested naming convention is to include both sides of the border. ‘Side A/Side B along X Thoroughfare.’ IE: “GA/TN on I75”,

-Either ‘welcome’ sign can be submitted and would prefer to have both included in the WM. Remember this Waymark is for both sides—‘Welcome to Idaho’ is not an acceptable name.

-Two photo minimum. Provide at least one clear photo of the sign/marker (no person or object required or desired), and one of the surrounding area (preferably one each way). The sign should ideally be of the crossing sign, not the welcome sign, which is usually offset from the actual border.

Another good idea is to provide a picture ‘looking’ both directions over the border (your person or object can be in these if desired). If no signage is present these directional pics are required.

-Some form of description is required. The more unique the crossing, the more description you should have. A good starting point: Is there a pull off or welcome center at the crossing? If the border crossing is considered ‘remote’, how does one access it? Has the road already crossed several other borders in the previous few miles? Does the visitor need to plan on making a ‘drive-by’ photo?

-Fill out all variables as best you can.
Type of crossing (Country, State, Province, County)
Where is the border located (Interstate, Highway, Rural Road, Trail, Sidewalk/Not Associated with a Road, Railroad, Water/Ferry, Other/Must have Private Message)
Is there a Welcome Center/Facilities (Yes/No - If yes, you must provide a description)

-If you feel you specific type of crossing is not addressed or variable type not shown you might want to write something in the private message box discussing the situation.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

-Your own picture of the signs or area. Discussing why it is you are crossing this border gets you bonus points.

-No one likes to read ‘TFTW’ and other unimaginitive visit logs.

-Armchair finds can be deleted by the owner or management group.
