St. John Mine was originally a natural cave. The Native Americans in the area mined lead out of it. Settlers to the area continued mining the cave. Today the cave is privately owned and visitors can pay to take a guided tour.

Lead Mining on the Merry Christmas Mine Hill began centuries ago by the Native Americans in the area. Europeans began mining on the hill in 1825. In the late 1800's zinc was discovered and this became one of the largest zinc mines in the country.
