The original building was constructed in 1756 as Whitefield's Tabernacle. It was struck by the last German V2 rocket to fall on London on Palm Sumday 1945. The replacement building was built in 1957 and became the American Church in 1976.

Christ Church was completed in 1876 at a cost of £60,000 which also included a tower and spire, paid with American contributions, as a memorial to Abraham Lincoln. The tower is all that remains of the original building due to bombing during WWII.
