Iconic Factories
 allows ratings
Managed By: Icon Here Old Factories
Description:
The goal of this category is to locate and photograph factories where notable products were or are made. We would prefer that this be restricted to products recognizable to most, perhaps even iconic. This could be the Corvette factory near Bowling Green, KY, the Hershey factory in Hershey, PA, or the Heinz factory in Pittsburgh. In some cases, these buildings are long gone, but record the location and giving an indication of what is there now would be acceptable.
Expanded Description:
The product should be something other than basic products, such as lumber, bread or cement blocks. Sorry, the goal is notable products, not a category to stuff those extra pictures you can't seem to fit anywhere else. An exception to this would be notable plants, like the Edgar Thompson Works near Pittsburgh, PA. In some cases, a notable product is made in many places, such as Coca Cola, and this would be acceptable, too. Please include some history of the location, including when the product was made, and when the structure was built or torn down. You can include a website link in addition to the now required Wikipedia link, as listed in the variables.

Please do not trespass or place youself or members of your team in danger while working on your Waymark target.

Instructions for Posting a Iconic Factories Waymark:
Find a location where a notable product was or is made. The product in question should be recognizable to most people. Title your waymark with the name of the product and the location. An example would be "Ivory Soap Factory Near Cincinnati, Ohio." When did the facility open? Is it still in operation? Give some information on the products produced. Be sure to include something on the founder if this is noteworthy.

Include at least one photograph of the building if it still exists. Otherwise, a picture of the area in general is in order. Document the product made, including such things as when it was first made, why the product is unique or notable and any other applicable information. If the structure or company is no longer there, give an indication of what the location is used for now.

Make sure your coordinates are very close to the building. You should be able to see it on the Google Sat image.

Effective immediately, in order to make this decision less subjective, you are asked to filter your waymark to verify it is a notable product.

The company and the product should be mentioned in a Wikipedia article. As an example, here is one on an early submission:

Brown and Haley

Please include this as your website listed with your waymark.

We will also accept more generic products if the location is notable in itself, such as an very interesting building or the location is historical (see my Edgar Thompson link above). Run it up the pole and see if anyone salutes, but you will have to sell us on it. If you think you might get some pushback on your waymark, give us a rough draft before you go crazy on it. Or you could just send one of us the Wikipedia link. If we think it has merit, we will send it back to you for completion. Just include a note that this is a rough draft so we know.

I like to see the building from overhead. When posting your coordinates, try to get as close to the building as possible and you can safely do. Sometimes there are a group of buildings nearby, and it is difficult to see what is the actual building on the Google Sat image. If you see your coordinates are too far away or your building is near a group of building, try adjusting them till the icon is close to the building on the Sat image.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
A unique picture of the location would be appreciated. Try to include yourself or your group in the frame if you are not shy. Give your impressions of the location in your log. You can also log a visit by including a photograph of one of the products made by the factory "in situ". You'll have to look it up. Log type should be "write note" in this case. Include a comment as to where you found the product and some other details you noted. Be sure to make it clear that product was made by the factory in question. Your posted image should clearly indicate this. When you post a visit of this type, please send a note to kbarhow to indicate you have completed one of these.
