U.S. National Register of Historic Places

Description:The U.S. National Register of Historic Places is the Nation's official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources.
Expanded Description: Any of the ~85,000 places listed on the [U.S.] National Register of Historic Places is a candidate for inclusion in this Waymark category.

The [U.S.] National Park Service maintains the official register. The register may be searched here.

There is another excellent site that appears to contain a complete copy of the register (and should be used as a primary source of data for waymarking, given its ease of use and greater availability).
Instructions for Posting a U.S. National Register of Historic Places Waymark:
To post a new waymark in this category, please:

Provide the name as it is listed in the [U.S.] National Register of Historic Places (preferably followed by City, State).

Provide at least a full paragraph description of your historic place. Your description should entice other waymarkers to seek out and visit (and log!) your waymark, so a complete and informative description is important.

Determine and provide the latitude and longitude (in the WGS84 datum) by physically visiting the site.

Provide one or more recent, non-copyrighted photographs of as much of the place as you can (the more you show of your historic place, the better). NOTE THAT HISTORIC DISTRICTS REQUIRE AT A MINIMUM ONE PHOTO OVERVIEW OF THE DISTRICT AND A PHOTO OF AT LEAST ONE CONTRIBUTING BUILDING. A single photo of a building is not acceptable for a district.

Provide the values of the variables to match the data available at the National Register of Historic Places).

If your historic place has a site on the WWW (please do a quick internet search), indicate the URL of that site in the Website (secondary) variable; again, having complete information for your waymark greatly increases its value to individual waymarkers who will follow you in visiting this site.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category: To log a waymark in this category, please provide a photograph that shows you (or your GPS receiver, if you're waymarking solo) and the place.
