This sign, just west of the bear in question, tells us of the large bronze grizzly placed at the west edge of The Oval, the centre of the campus. He has greeted students, faculty and visitors to the campus since his birth in 1969.

This impressive Neo-classical building was the home of Caroline Worden, daughter of Missoula founder Frank Worden, and Joseph Dixon, Governor of Montana from 1921 to 1925 and later Assistant Secretary of the Interior from 1929 to 1933.

There were five buildings built on the U of M campus in the years 1935 to 1939. Two of the five were built in the Art Deco Style while the other two followed the Renaissance Revival style already extant. This is one of the two art deco buildings.

This was one of five buildings built between 1935 and 1939, most of which were financed or assisted by either the WPA or the PWA. Construction of this building was made possible through a WPA loan and the sale of bonds.

This was the very first building to go up on the new 40 acre campus of the equally new University of Montana. This and the extinct Science Hall comprised the entire campus on opening day in 1899. Luckily, this elegant building has survived.

Designed by local architect Ole Bakke, this building was added to the campus in 1921 and opened to students in 1922. Bakke adorned its exterior with a series of shields and emblems to loudly proclaim the discipline taught within.

Though the Faculty of Journalism was founded in 1914, it had no permanent and acceptable home until 1937, when this building was completed with the aid of PWA funding. Quite a step up from the original four tents pitched in 1914.

The Oval has been an integral part of this campus since its planning in 1895. Though deviations from the master plan began as early as 1903, The Oval was laid down according to the master plan and remains as it was in 1899.

This beautiful old theatre narrowly escaped its demise in 2006 when a fire did extensive damage to the interior and the roof. The town, however, loves its theatre and took it upon itself to rebuild. We're sure glad they did.

Marble and mahogany inside and very much dignified outside, this former bank was designed by architect Michael Beezer of Seattle and brought to completion in 1912. It was built for S. E. Larabie, one time partner of Butte copper king W. A. Clark.

Opening grandly on December 7, 1910, the highly capitalized U.S. National Bank (capital - $50,000) was designed by architect Herman Kemna of Butte, MT. This was only the second bank to open in Deer Lodge, which had been around since the 1860s.
