The Bridgewater Canal is considered to be the first true canal in the UK because it uses existing waterways as sources of water for the canal rather navigation routes.

This stretch of the canal connects Runcorn to Manchester and was constructed between 1767 and 1776.

The pub sign shows a picture of what looks like a true representation of White's Bridge as it would have looked like when it was first built. These days there is a water pipe on the side of the bridge.

This sign is attached to the pub next to the canal tow path, and there is also a similar sign on the front of the pub.
